The Member representing Aniocha North Constituency in Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Ochei, was, yesterday, elected the new Speaker of the House.
Also, the only member, who returned for the fourth time, Mr. Basil Ganagana, representing Patani Constituency was elected the Deputy Speaker.
Incidentally, the immediate past Speaker of the House, Mr. Sam Obi, representing Ika North Constituency, who was initially believed to be gunning for the position, was the one who nominated Ochei.
The position of the Speaker, according to the unwritten zoning formula of the ruling People’s Democratic , PDP, which has the majority of 17 members out of the 29-member Assembly, was zoned to Delta North senatorial district. Democratic People’s Party, DPP, has eight members, while Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has one member.
However, nobody was sworn in for the two remaining seats, namely the Ugheli South and Burutu II constituencies due to political logjam arising from court injunction and inclusive election by INEC.
Ochei promised to establish a cordial relationship between the House and other arms of government. He made it clear that in doing so, he would ensure that the independence of the legislature was not compromised.
On his part, one of the new entrants, Mr. Benjamin Essien, representing Isoko South I constituency on the platform of DPP said, “my priority is to attract the dividends of democracy and to organise regular town hall meetings so that people can interact with me regularly.”
