English clubs so used to qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Champions League suddenly face the prospect of losing millions – and dropping into the dreaded Europa League.
The air of English club invincibility has faded this season as Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea go down to the wire this week to try to qualify for the last 16.
In the last 10 years English clubs have gone out at the group stage only three times (Liverpool in 2002-03 and 2009-10, Manchester United in 2005-06).
They could lose as many again in the space of 24 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Why are English clubs in this precarious position this season? It seems money can't buy European glory.
