In another wikileak bombshell, in what appears to be an inexhaustible arsenal of dark secrets, internet whistleblower WikiLeaks has disclosed how former President Olusegun Obasanjo offered Justice Ibrahim Kutigi $1.6m bribe to compromise the judiciary and drop a suit by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The cables added that Obasanjo’s move was spearheaded by two of his former aides who, in an attempt to compromise the Supreme Court ahead of the 2007 presidential poll, visited Kutigi’s office. But the cables added that the then CJN rejected the offer and asked them to leave. The United States agents, in the cables, also claimed that the duo were making moves to scuttle the presidential ambition of then vice-president Atiku Abubakar on Obasanjo’s instructions.
Reacting to WikiLeaks’ claim, one of the sons of Kutigi, who is also a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Mohammed Sani, said that the family preferred to exercise restraint before reacting to the cables. Sani, who represents Kutigi/ Lavun Federal Constituency, also told our correspondent that the cables were mere conversations between individuals and the United States envoy.-Leadership
