University of Nigeria @50, Utomi decries poor state of varsity

The Chairman, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, at 50 Endowment/Fundraising Committee, Prof Pat Utomi, has declared that UNN was not immuned from the common affliction bedeviling tertiary institutions
in the country.
According to him, poor funding, deplorable infrastructure, poor welfare packages, misplacement of priorities are some of the problems in the education sector.
He said it was in the light of this that the Alumni Association of University of Nigeria, in commemoration of the institution’s 50th anniversary, was organising a fundraising/ endowment dinner to tackle some of the challenges in the school.
He said: “While our great university has produced great men and women that have excelled in their various chosen careers both locally and internationally, it has also suffered significantly from the common affliction of every public tertiary institution in Nigeria. It is for this reason that we have decided to seize the opportunity of this golden anniversary to launch a fundraising and endowment campaign.
Utomi explained that each Nl billion in the N50 billion target represented each of the years the university had been in existence, adding that  the funds were  meant for upgrade of academic infrastructure to world standards;  renovation and building of additional hostel accommodations; construction of a state-of-the-art alumni centre as well as attracting some of the best academic talents, both locally and internationally, to the school.
“The projects above are, of course, not exhaustive but indicative of the steps we want to take in our collective quest to build the University of Nigeria to its deserved status as the pride of Nigeria and Africa,” he stated adding that the funds would be raised from members of the alumni, their friends, associates and everyone interested in creating a truly exceptional learning environment for the leaders of tomorrow and an enabling environment for their teachers.
