Shehu of Borno Denies role in Boko Haram leader death

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Garbai, has denied involvement in the quelling of the 2009 Yusufiyya sect uprising in the state, which led to the killing of the sect leaders.
The sect, popularly called Boko Haram, had on Monday called for the prosecution of the first class traditional ruler for his alleged involvement in the killing of its leaders during the crisis.
Garbai, in a  statement by Alhaji Zanna Laisu, Secretary, Borno Emirate Council, in Maiduguri, yesterday,  said he was surprised at the development.
He said the response became necessary, “because of the serious concern and displeasure shown by the various communities, the good people of Borno Emirate and the nation in general on the issue.
The statement said: “For the avoidance of doubt, at no time was the Shehu of Borno and the Emirate Council ever contacted or consulted by any authority within or outside the state on the breach of peace in Maiduguri in particular, and the state in general.
“The Emirate Council condemns in strong terms, all insinuations of its involvement or that of the  traditional ruler.
‘The Shehu of Borno, since his ascension to the throne, has continued to preach peace, harmony, stability and justice which are the greatest and well-known heritage of the Borno Emirate since time immemorial.’’-vanguard
