Senator Mark, who brought to a close the valedictory session to mark the end of life of the Senate, lauded the sixth Senate for feats such as amending sections of the 1999 Constitution and the ‘doctrine of necessity’ which saved the country from chaos during the ill- health of the late President Umar Yar’Adua.
In an emotion-laden voice, Mark, who offered thanks to God for a successful tenure, noted with grief the passing away of Senators Tawar Wada and Peto Dukku from Gombe State, during his reign.
Speaking on the achievements of the Senate under his leadership, he noted, “It is a great honour for us to have been found worthy by our respective constituents to serve this nation as Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is also ennobling to have been elected to serve our people at a very critical period of our political history.
“The concept of the ”Doctrine of Necessity” has enriched our political lexicon and rescued us from the brink. History will, however, not judge our performance on the face of how we handled this lacuna alone but in other areas.
”In addition, the 6th Senate for the first time successfully amended the 1999 Constitution. Despite its very cumbersome processes, not only did we do it once but thrice, with the confidence and support of the generality of our people.
“I am indeed happy to have been part of the 6th Senate which also successfully carried out the amendment of the Electoral Act (2010). This amendment provided the water-shed for the conduct of free, fair and credible elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) this year.
He said those who failed to attend plenary have denied their constituents valuable representations at the Senate, while urging members of the incoming seventh Senate to be wary of poor attendance.
Some of the Senators who spoke during the valedictory session praised the leadership qualities of Senator Mark, nothing that his intelligence and maturity gave the Senate uninterrupted stability for four years.
The Senators also promised to make state creation top of their agenda when the seventh Senate is convene on June 6.
Senator Ayogu Eze during his valedictory speech said, “We are going to prove that state creation is possible in a democratic setting. We are going to show in the seventh Senate that through dialogue, more states can be created in Nigeria.”
