Justice Donatus Okorowo of a Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded the embattled former speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC. The judge said he should remain with the anti-graft agency till 12pm on Friday when his formal bail application will be heard and determined.
Bankole who was ushered into the High Court premises by stern looking operatives of the EFCC at exactly 8:45 am today, pleaded not guilty to the entire 16-count criminal charge that was preferred against him.
Frantic efforts by a team of four Senior Advocates of Nigeria who represented him in court today, to secure his immediate release from the EFCC custody proved abortive following a stiff opposition by the prosecuting counsel, Mr Festus Keyamo, who maintained that the commission had uncovered subterranean moves by the accused person to flee the country.
Consequent upon EFCC’s objection, Justice Okorowo ordered the lead defence counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, to file a formal bail application today.
Bankole was later whisked away by stern looking security operatives, in a white coaster bus marked ABUJA-BR- 739- BWR.
