More than a week after five members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were abducted in Omedeme Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, the kidnappers have reduced their
initial ransom of N100 million to N10 million. The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Suleiman Abba, who disclosed this yesterday, also said that security operatives were closing in on the abductors.
He said that the corps members would soon regain their freedom, disclosing that the police and other security operatives handling the matter now know those behind the kidnap.
He, however, did not disclose the individuals or groups behind it, because, according to him, doing so would scuttle the investigation.
Abba said the kidnap was strictly motivated by the ransom the perpetrators hope to get by carrying out the act.
He said: “Several police teams, both overt and covert patrols, are carrying out surveillance, raids and other activities pertaining to this investigation. We are working with our colleagues in the military, State Security Service (SSS) and we are doing this collectively and individually.
“We want justice to take its normal course. Our efforts have reached an advanced stage. We have identified those involved and our efforts will soon be fruitful. I assure you that very soon, we will apprehend the culprits, and secure the corps members release.”-compass
