Despite last week’s riots in many Northern states where its chieftains’ houses and offices were major targets, the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] appeared to have fully recovered its feet and was on the way to winning yesterday’s governorship and state assembly elections in the majority of those states. As at midnight however, only a fraction of the results were in and the situation could still change in many states. Final results are expected to be announced in all the states today.
A sample of results declared at many polling units in Niger State showed that Governor Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu of PDP was having an early lead over his main opponent, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) candidate Alhaji Bako Shettima.
At Umaru Musa Polling Unit, Aliyu got 539 votes to CPC’s 71 votes. In Hospital Mata, CPC got 88 votes while to PDP’s 215. At the Water Board Top Hill Polling Unit where General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar voted, PDP had 144 to CPC’s 126 votes. At Rashida, New Nigeria Airways polling units, PDP got 409 to CPC’s only 188 votes, while in Jikpan 1 Bosso, PDP got 176 to CPC’s 130 votes. At the Guest House, Tunga polling unit PDP had 259 to CPC’s 122, while in Galadima Polling Unit, Kontagora PDP had 78, CPC 284 and at Galadima B. Kontagora, PDP had 52 to CPC’s 231.
Although PDP was leading overall in Niger State, indications were that it would have a tough time winning in Suleja, Kontagora and Bida. Lapai, Agaie and Minna were however in its firm grip.
In Kwara State, the long battle for supremacy between redoubtable kingmaker Dr. Olusola Saraki and his son Governor Bukola Saraki appears to be ending in favour of the son, with his PDP candidate Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed leading in yesterday’s race against Bukola’s sister, the ACPN candidate Senator Gbemisola Saraki and the CAN candidate Mohamed Dele Belgore.
According to early results from Ajikobi Ode Opobiyi ward 021, 005 and 006, PDP led with 124, 207 and 194 votes respectively against ACPN’s 86, 90 and 74 while ACN got 43, 46 and 80. CPC had 1, 2 and 1 votes respectively.
In Osere Junction of Oko Erin area, ACN had 211, ACPN 97, PDP 87 and CPC 2. In Ode Balogun Alanamu, ACN scored 241, PDP 135, ACPN 27 and CPC 2. In Ode Olomomesan unit, PDP had 236, ACN 85, ACPN 15 and CPC 0.
In Ode Koto, PDP led with 207, ACN 120, ACPN 13 while CPC had zero votes. In four units of Magaji Aare ward 025, 003, 023 and 007 ACN won three of the polling units with 151, 94, 70 and 37. PDP won one unit with 42, 58, 50 and 88 respectively, ACPN 20, 17, 18 and 17 while CPC scored 0, 23, 15 and 17. Report from Offa local government also shows that ACN won in majority of the polling units.
Early results from several polling units in Sokoto town, where only senatorial and state assembly elections were held, showed that PDP was leading in most of them. For example, in Magajin Gari A 001, PDP had 205 votes to CPC’s 48. In 002, PDP had 193 to CPC’s 83, while in 003, PDP had 167 to CPC’s 43. Similarly, in Waziri A 002, PDP had 487 to CPC’s 33 votes. In Magajin Gari Malleri, PDP got 191 votes to CPC’s 100.
Early results in Borno State presented a confusing picture. While the PDP swept many polling units in the state capital, Maiduguri, ANPP supporters had already launched into a celebration, saying results from the various local government areas showed that their candidate Alhaji Kashim Shettima had won.
At the Government House polling station, PDP candidate Alhaji Muhammadu Goni scored 233 votes to ANPP’s 210. Mustapha Baba Shehuri of CPC scored 34. At Ummarari in Maiduguri metropolis, PDP scored 366 to ANPP’s 6 and CPCs 14 votes.
In Bolori polling unit, PDP scored 165, ANPP 40 and CPC 16 while at Kasuwar Bolori polling unit, the PDP had 255, ANPP 32 and CPC 26.
Early results from Zamfara State showed that the ANPP, led by former state governor Senator Ahmed Sani, Yariman Bakura, is leading the ruling PDP in the state. Results from many polling stations in Tsafe and the state capital, Gusau showed ANPP was leading. Similarly, early results from Kebbi State showed that Governor Saidu Nasamu Dakingari of PDP led CPC candidate Abubakar Gari Malam in most of the polling units declared in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi. There were no results from other areas as we went to press.
There were only scanty results from Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States as we went to press last night.Preliminary reports declared in the two Senatorial districts showed that PDP was leading in most of the local governments in Katsina Central while the opposition CPC leads in Funtua senatorial district. From Kano, PDP candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso was reported to have won in Bichi Local Government, but other reports had it that ANPP’s Salisu Sagir Takai was doing well in other parts of the state. And in Jigawa, early reports were that Governor Sule Lamido of PDP was doing well in the face of a divided opposition, three strong candidates of CAN, CPC and ANPP stood against him.
From Rivers came reports that PDP’s Governor Rotimi Amaechi recorded an early lead last night as results trickled in from numerous polling units in some parts of Port Harcourt, the state capital. His lead was mostly caused by the splitting of votes by his two main challengers, former governor Celestine Omehia of APGA and ex-transport minister Dr Abiye Sekibo of the CAN, and candidate.
Results from Universal Primary education school in Sangana, one of the big centres in ward 4 with 13 polling zones showed that Amaechi’s PDP won in most of the units and was trailed by Omehia’s APGA while Sekibo’s ACN followed. In unit 26 of that ward, Amaechi got 71 votes; Omehia-56 and Sekibo-20; in unit 30, Amaechi got 52 votes, Omehia-41 and Sekibo-10. In unit 18, Amaechi got 50 votes, Omehia-33 and Sekibo-08. In unit 21, Amaechi got 90 votes, Omehia-70 votes and Sekibo-22 votes.
In unit 29, Amaechi got 56 votes, Omehia-47 and Sekibo-16. In unit 22, Amaechi also led with 66 votes, Omehia-34 and Sekibo-13. In unit 27, Amaechi also got 62 votes, Omehia-52 and Sekibo-20. In unit 28, Amaechi secured 81 votes, Omehia-36 and Sekibo-23. In unit 24, Amaechi also led with 78 votes, Omehia-62 and Sekibo-14.
In unit 20, Amaechi equally led with 94 votes, Omehia-64 and Sekibo-19. Omehia however won units 19 and 25 with 65 and 70 votes respectively while Amaechi followed with 51 and 64 votes while Sekibo went away with 13 votes in each of the two units.
In Imo State, early results showed APGA’s candidate Chief Rochas Okorocha leading in Owerri municipality and parts of Owerri North. Governorship election results in Ihitte -Oha polling units in Owerri North showed APGA with 105, PDP 1 and ACN 6 votes. In Ihitte-Oha unit 12 Owerri North, PDP 27, APGA 84, ACN 3. In Ikenegbu Girls Owerri in Owerri Municipal council, PDP 21, APGA128, ACN16, while at Ikenegbu Secondary School, Owerri Municipal PDP 41, APGA 243, ACN33.
At Emmanuel College, Owerri Municipal PDP got 110, APGA 53 and 37 votes, while at Development Primary school and Government College, APGA scored the highest votes.
Early results from Lagos indicate that CAN candidate Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola was leading in most of the 25 polling units visited by Daily Trust late yesterday while his arch rival, Dr Samsudeen Ade Dosunmu of PDP trailed behind.
Some of the areas visited with their results pasted on the walls included Agege, Ojota, Oregun, Ikeja, Surulere, Shomolu, Yaba, Lagos Secretariat, Ojodu, Ikorodu, and Mushin Victoria Island. As at 6 At Surulere ward F1 where the PDP candidate, Dr Dosunmu voted, ACN got the highest votes of 4,405 votes against PDP’s 1,347 votes. At the polling unit where Dosunmu voted, ACN scored 175 votes while PDP got 78 votes. At Secretarial polling unit where the former governor of the state, Bola Tinubu voted, CAN recorded 303 while PDP scored 34. At Oregun polling unit, ACN got 84 while PDP recorded 28. At Ojota polling centre, ACN scored 131, PDP 59 and at Ikeja Central ACN scored 103, PDP 30. The result was also the same in Oba Akran polling unit where CAN recorded 54 votes as against 17 votes of PDP From Ogun State came reports that CAN’s governorship candidate Sen. Ibikunle Amosun was in an early lead. Also, the son of the former Ogun state governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, Olumide, who is contesting the House of Representatives seat for Abeokuta North, Odeda and Obafemi Owode federal constituency trounced the former President in his Ward 11, Unit 2, Sokori in Abeokuta North council area.
The ACN rep candidate recorded 170 votes against Obasanjo’s PDP coming second with 52 votes. The State governor’s Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) got 11 votes.
The ACN guber candidate polled 50 votes in Atola Polling booth at Onigbedu/Elere ward 9 to defeat PDP with a single vote, while the PPN had no vote. Results from all the 25 governorship races all over the country that were held yesterday are expected to be announced today.
