INEC Nigeria Postones Elections in two states

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the governorship and state house of assembly elections in Bauchi and Kaduna states - two states deemed to have been the worst hit by the wave of post-election violence in the north that followed last week's presidential election.

Elections in the two states will now hold on April 28, two days after the other states of the federation have gone to the polls to elect their governors and state house of assembly representatives. The announcement was made by the chairman of the electoral body, Attahiru Jega, during a televised press conference a few minutes ago.

He said that although the security situation in the two states had improved, the commission would allow more time for normalcy to return.

Mr Jega also said that the commission would not organise elections in five states where the state governors recently secured court injuctions against the polls on the grounds that their tenures would not end until next year. The states are Adamawa, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Kogi and Sokoto.
