Gov. Yakowa wins Kaduna governorship poll

Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was yesterday declared the winner of the governorship election in Kaduna State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He polled 1,134,319 votes out of the total 2,580,439 votes cast in a keenly contested election. The candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Haruna Sae’ed, came second with 1,133,564 votes.
Announcing the result at the office of the electoral body last night amidst tight security, the chief returning officer, who is also the vice-chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Mustapha Abdullahi, declared that, “Mr Yakowa, having polled the highest number of votes is, therefore, the duly elected governor of the state.”
But opposition parties have rejected the result, calling for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. In a combined press briefing, the candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Balarabe Musa; Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Sani Sha’aban; Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Haruna Sae’ed, and Muktar Aruwa of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), alleged massive irregularities by the PDP. According to them, the party acted in collaboration with INEC and security agencies to rig the election.
“In line with the character of the PDP which is willing to perpetuate themselves in power by all means and at all costs, they found it very convenient to carry out their rigging. Reports from southern Kaduna indicate more than 90 percent voter turnout in the area, with the dead and displaced victims of the recent violence all voting, and they voted PDP,” the statement read.
Responding to his victory, Mr Yakowa thanked the people for voting for him and asked all to join him in moving the state forward. He said that the victory was not for celebration but sober reflection on the post-election violence in the state.

The people have spoken – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday reviewed the governorship and House of Assembly Elections in Ogun State and urged party members not to despair, saying the people of the State had spoken with their votes in the election held Tuesday

Even the major losers at the polls, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, through its elders forum, gathered to chart a way forward for the party in Lagos

Ajimobi to probe Akala

GOVERNOR-elect in Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi has said he would scrutinize all financial activities of the out-going Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala to ensure things are in right order in the state.

Ajimobi who extended an olive branch to Akala and the governorship candidate of Accord Party, Senator Rashidi Ladoja thanked the governor for giving him a good fight which actually strengthened his faith in God.
This came as Governor Akala and Ladoja congratulated Senator Ajimobi who won the governorship seat on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN) for his hard-earned victory.
Akala said though bickering and tough words were exchanged in weeks leading to the election, he understood that both of them were able to differentiate between foes and political opposition.
In a statement he personally signed, the out-going governor said to him, the two of them desired to serve the people of the state, therefore hot exchanges of words were a reflection of their individual views on burning issues concerning development of the state rather than anything personal”.
But, Ajimobi said the review of the past activities of the governor was necessary so as to move the state forward.
While addressing newsmen in his Oluyole residence Thursday, he said, “for me, when you take over any organisation, there may be need to review the past. When I take over the governance of the state, I will like to examine the past activities of Chief Akala. You know, there is always the need to review where we were, where we are and where we are going for us to move forward”.
“If the state must move forward, there is need to look into the past activities of the past of the outgoing governor. If we must move forward, there is need for a review of his activities. If you call it probe, so be it and if you call it audit, so be it. I won’t like to use the word probe, I will call it stock-taking”, he said.
Ajimobi said, “I will try to examine and establish that we would look into it. Probing is also auditing. The wish of the people brought us and I have promised them many things. I will implement all those things that I promised”.
On whether his government would embrace others, he said he would run a rainbow government so that the state which had been highly impoverished would heave a sigh of relief.
“The whole state is rainbow. Even, God who created the world did not put only good people there. He also created bad people. I will run a rainbow government.
Akala said his statement was to stem further tension in the state so that people could get on with their lives.
According to him, without any iota of doubt, his administration had engineered a profound legacy that should make it easier for the in-coming administration to build on.
Meanwhile, many admirers and supporters of the governor elect thronged his residence chanting victory songs. Security men guarding his residence had hectic time controlling the surging crowd who were eating and drinking.
In the city, they were wielding brooms chanting anti-Akala songs. The police vehicles were seen going round the city to ensure that there was no violence.

Update on the Royal wedding

A smiling Prince William and Kate Middleton arrived at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday night to run through their wedding ceremony. Next time, it'll be for real. Although there had been an earlier rehearsal for the military, using a Middleton lookalike, this was a rehearsal for the bride and groom.

William, 28, wore a charcoal grey suit and Middleton, 29, wore a black dress as they arrived in a chauffer-driven Range Rover at sunset. Best man Prince Harry, 26, and the maid of honor, Kate's sister Pippa Middleton, 27, arrived in a silver van. They were flanked by two motorcycle police officers.

It was their last rehearsal before Friday's wedding, according to multiple news reports.
It's official! The betrothed couple will marry on April 29 in the biggest royal wedding since Charles and Di
Any 140-character loving guests attending the April 29 wedding of Prince William and Catherine (Kate) Middleton will be sorely disappointed, as signal-blocking technology will be installed at Westminster Abbey to nix cellphone use.
According to Yahoo, the idea was suggested by members of the royal family and confirmed by police and security. They hope nixing phones and tweeting will cut down on news photos and videos featuring cellphone-toting guests, distracting ringtones and info about the wedding getting out ahead of the ceremony.
The absence of Twitter at the actual event doesn’t mean the web will go silent, obviously — in fact, talk of the Royal Wedding is accelerating rapidly on Facebook and Twitter.

Path of Moderation

Al-Baqara (The Cow) - Chapter 2: Verse 143 (partial)
"Thus We have made of you a community justly balanced that you might be witnesses over other nations and the Messenger a witness over yourselves."
The renowned Quran commentator, Ibn Kathir wrote concerning this verse that the Muslim community (ummah) qualifies as a witness because of its commitment to moderation (wasatiyyah) and truth.
The renowned Tunisian scholar, Muhammad Tahir ibn Ashur, went on record that 'in moderation lies the essence of all virtues and it is a great protector against indulgence in corruption and caprice.'
Yusuf al-Qaradawi has similarly observed that moderation is the correct path that leads the Muslim community to its ideals of attaining material and spiritual success: 'It is the divinely ordained moral and humanitarian mission of the Muslim community to pursue all its goals through moderation.

Deviation from the path of moderation brings nothing but destruction and loss.'
Moderation is manifested, according to Wahbah al-Zuhaili, in the balanced attention one pays to one's rights over, and one's obligations towards, others, to the material world and the spiritual world; it also means a balance between forgiveness and resistance, between extravagance and niggardliness, and a resolute aversion to extremism and terrorism in all their manifestations. Zuhaili added that Islam advocates these values, not only among Muslims themselves, but also in their relations with other communities and nations.
One ought to acknowledge, perhaps, in the same spirit of moderation, that something has gone wrong with the substantive equilibrium of Islamic legal thought concerning the treatment of women. To refer once again to Yusuf Al-Qaradawi's insightful remarks: 'It is an obligation of the ummah to protect the women from the excesses of the Muslim juristic legacy of the past, and those of the Modern West, both of which strip women of their essential humanity.' Both need to be corrected through search for balanced and moderate solutions.
Lastly, is it a coincidence, one might ask, to note that this verse of moderation occurs in the exact middle of the longest chapter (al-Baqarah) of the Quran, which consists of 286 verses.

Obama seeks to end birthplace controversy

The White House has released a longer version of Barack Obama's US birth certificate to try to end a debate within Republican circles that he was not born in the United States.
The new document - a "long-form" birth certificate - confirms what a shorter version has said, that Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961, but provides a little more information, such as that he was born at Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital.
He had also earlier released a standard short form, but requested copies of his original birth certificate from Hawaii officials this week in hopes of quieting the controversy.
White House officials have said the issue was settled long ago. But so-called birthers opposed to Obama have kept the issue alive.Donald Trump, a potential Republican presidential candidate, recently began questioning why Obama had not ensured the long form was released.
Obama said on Wednesday that he was bemused over conspiracy theories over his birthplace, and said the media's interest in the "sideshow" issue was a distraction in a "serious time".

"We're not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers," he said.

PlayStation data theft puts millions at risk

More than a week after being the target of an online attack, Sony has said the personal information - including credit card details - of up to 77million of its customers may have been stolen.
The electronics giant's internet gaming service, PlayStation Network, was "compromised with an illegal and unauthorised intrusion", said the company.
It planned to restore "some services" within a week, and has appointed a computer security company to investigate the network's outage.
Writing on the company's blog, Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications, said that users' names, home and email addresses, login and password details - as well as billing history - may have been accessed by "an unauthorised person".
"While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility," he posted.
"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."
The personal details of children may also be at risk, he explained.
"If you have authorised a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained."
Hack attack
The network was hacked at some point between April 17 and April 19, and Sony turned off the services shortly after to prevent any further attacks.
But the delay in the corporation informing its customers that their personal information was at risk led US Senator Richard Blumenthal to write to Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment.
"Although the breach occurred nearly a week ago, Sony has not notified customers of the intrusion, or provided information that is vital to allowing individuals to protect themselves from identity theft, such as informing users whether their personal or financial information may have been compromised," he wrote.
"Nor has Sony specified how it intends to protect these consumers."

Following Sony's legal action against PS3 hacker George Hotz, hacktivist group Anonymous threatened to target the Tokyo-based conglomerate - but this week denied it was behind the attack on the PlayStation Network.
"For once we didn't do it," said the group.
If confirmed at 77million records, it would rank as one of the largest ever credit card data breaches. The Open Security Foundation lists three larger, with merchant processing company Heartland Payment Systems taking the top spot after a 2008 hack exposed up to 130million credit card details.
Breach of trust
Sony's delayed reaction to the breach is generating added anger for its customers, questioning whether the brand could ever be trusted again with individuals' financial information.
"If you have compromised my credit information, you will never receive it again," commented 'Korbei83' on Seybold's blog post. "The fact that you've waited this long to divulge this information to your customers is deplorable. Shame on you."
"Excuse me while I go change my password.. oh wait. I can’t," the commenter wrote.
Technology experts say Sony might never recover from this "disaster."
"Chances are Playstation is going to have to work very hard to rebuild that trust," Tristan Donovan, author of "Replay: the History of Video Games" said. "It could almost be irreparable damage.
Matthew Bath, technology editor at Which?, warns customers and companies to be more prudent of today's "cyber game of cat and mouse."
"The quicker the companies innovate to try and protect your financial information world hackers try and keep one step ahead to find those loopholes and backdoors to try and exploit it," Bath told Al Jazeera.
"As we store more of our information on the Amazons, the Sonys and the Microsofts of the world, they're going to have work really incredibly hard not to just regain our trust but to actually keep our data safe," he said."
